Teeth Matters

I was driving home last Friday and listening to LBC radio.  A Harley Street dentist was being interviewed - Dr Steve Sharma.   It proved to be a very entertaining and informative session.  There was also a phone in and it was fascinating to hear the problems people have with their teeth.  He was very frank about taking care of your teeth and how some neglect their teeth over many years.  The upside to this was that he stressed that no matter how guilty you feel about the neglect you still should go to a dentist who will agree a plan with you.

One thing I still find incredible is that some do not clean their teeth.  I can't imagine how they must feel on a daily basis with remnants of food between teeth and the build up of plaque.

Dr Sharma also mentioned that visiting a dentist is not only about the teeth but also about examination of the soft tissue in the mouth, under the tongue etc. to make sure nothing sinister is happening.

Surely from a health point of view taking care of your teeth is essential - even doing the basics would be beneficial.

Dr Sharma also outlined some of the most recent research on tackling bone loss, implants, veneers and so on - this certainly gave that the impression that there is hope for those who have more extreme conditions.

I can't emphasise enough how important it is to have regular checkups with your dentist and to visit a hygienist. I have to give my dentist a mention Mr Mistry in Borehamwood  who has looked after my teeth and my family's teeth over many years and has done a brilliant job.

I have dental insurance which keeps costs down.  I know some will say they can't afford to go to a dentist and can't find an NHS dentist but I would argue it is a matter of priorities.  Some will spend money on facials, massages, spas -  surely attending to your teeth is one of the best beauty treatments you can have.

What is surprising is that many people on TV who can afford to have the best treatment fail to pay attention to their teeth.  If you are in the communication business in all of its guises you must be conscious of what others are seeing.  There are a number of politicians and celebs who should really take note - as it is a real turn off when you see dirty teeth.  I know some are smokers and the staining is very noticeable particularly on HD TV!

A healthy mouth and a nice smile will give you a confidence boost, can make you look more attractive and hopefully make you look younger  and will help you smile more!

New Year Resolutions!!!

I have started to meet the challenges of my resolutions.  I decided to define them over 3 months and then review as I feel it is unrealistic to take them beyond this timeline.
Bearing in mind the overall considerations to be taken into account in my last post….here are my objectives……

  1. Health - keep up 4/5 trips per week to the gym; maintain weight by monitoring weight weekly; keep alcohol consumption to weekends
  2. Beauty - cleanse face nightly - sometimes get lazy at doing this properly;
  3. Wardrobe - clothes cull on items not worn for 2 years
  4. Hobbies - complete 3 oil portraits; update blog every 2/3 days
Not an extensive list I know but not meant to be as in this way there is a chance of ticking the boxes at the end of 3 months!

Have you decided on your resolutions?

Never say never!

A couple of years ago I won a spa day in a raffle.  Most people would be thrilled but I am afraid I was underwhelmed – I have never seen the point of having things done which you could easily have at home …. and for a fraction of the cost!  Anyway I had a mud wrap which was novel!  I am sure many of you reading this may have experienced this treatment - being covered in slime but it was new to me.  I was then wrapped in “bacofoil “.  The beauty therapist then told me to relax for 20 minutes and enjoy.  She lit soothing candles around me and departed.  As I lay there I wanted to laugh this seemed so absurd and …….relax?  I kept thinking about things I needed to do and how much more productive I could be doing something else.  Anyway after showering I must admit that my skin did feel smooth and silky.

My husband collected me and said I looked as if I had flu!  I am afraid I have always been like this – even if we are on holiday on the beach I find it quite difficult to switch off.

However this is not to say that I don’t appreciate that some treatments are really beneficial.  Not long after the mud experience a friend recommended a  laser rejuvenating facial she had had which had certainly tightened up her face  and she did look younger. So I thought I would have a go.  Certainly not cheap but I found it did make a difference.  The face is thoroughly cleansed and then a lubricating lotion applied.  The laser wand is then gently moved over the face.  You feel a slight pinging sensation but certainly I didn’t find it uncomfortable. The session lasted an hour and cost £100.  It was recommended that you have several sessions with approx. 4 weeks interval in between.  I got the impression this is something that probably has to continue longer term and even though very happy with the results could not make such a financial commitment.

I subsequently found that there is a home laser device which you can use at home.  I am again quite skeptical about the claims made with any product and so did my own research.  The comments  and feedback I found were really favourable .  This laser rejuvenating laser claimed to help with firming up the face, helping to diminish fine lines and help with discoloration which sadly comes with age.   It is made by Tria and at £450 is not cheap but when you consider the cost of beauty treatments it makes it seem quite reasonable.

You can buy this direct from tria or from other outlets such as Amazon and can probably find an offer if you try.
 Here is the website:

My husband also uses it and has found it has lightened  his age spots – so everyone happy J
This has worked for us but we all have different experiences and reactions so you have to explore what works for you.  By the way I also find I can use the laser while I am on the phone, reading a book, on my iPad  - you know women and multi tasking !!

Has anyone else tried this or something similar and would like to share what they have experienced?
